Daytime, On Deck, and Poolside

Going ashore in scruffy jeans, t-shirts, athletic garb, and flip flops can be considered disrespectful in some ports of call and you will be treated accordingly. The exception to the rule is active shore excursions where you should dress to fit the activity. Check before you go because you never want to be disrespectful. All cruise lines offer tips about what to wear at each port of call. When in doubt, ask a crew member. Expect to do a lot of walking so choose a comfortable shoe.

Dress requirements change as the sun sets. Most cruise lines include at least one formal evening and some guests still choose to wear a tux on those occasions, although they are increasingly being outnumbered by business suits. If you are not going to wear a tux then pack a dark blue or gray business suit, a dress shirt, and tie. For every other dressier evening opt for chinos, a sport coat, and an open-collared shirt.
